The Great Cholesterol Caper

In 2010 constitutional lawyer Jonathan Emord published the book “Global Censorship of Health Information”. In the Sentinel Press publication Emord wrote about the intellectual origins of freedom of speech from the Age of Enlightenment to the founding of the American republic. Today government censorship of health information worldwide relies on the same mechanisms of prior restraint that were used in Europe from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. In his book Emord shows how censorship is a by-product of government efforts to protect state-sponsored drug monopolies from competition. The protectionism locks out of the market information indispensable to human health to fill the coffers of drug companies and to establish drugs to be the only lawful means to prevent and treat disease when an enormous body of science reveals dietary ingredients to have disease prevention and treatment effects. Convinced that speech freedom and health are lost due to government censorship, Emord explains how litigation and legislation can be used to bring down the barriers and give the public access to information that can save lives. Beyond using good food and quality supplements I believe you have a right to choice of health care options. To choose the option best for you it is important to understand that education is the foundation of being able to make informed decisions. I hope that in reading my work you gain a broader understanding of what’s at stake for your health.

The action, once you have more information, is up to you. And as I always told my students, you are paying the bill whether it is through insurance or cash out-of-pocket, and this puts you in the driver’s seat. You are employing any health care provider and because of this you have a voice in the process.

While there are many examples of how Big PhRMA and Big Insurance rule health care providers today, one that always irritates me is the cholesterol scam.

First remember that there was at one time a rule in medical decision making. Medical students were taught, “Listen carefully to what the patient is telling you, Doctor, for he is telling you the diagnosis.” The patient too was always described as the “best historian”.

The drug Lipitor is made from the natural substance known as Red Rice Yeast, also a ‘statin’. In the pharmaceutical process this yeast is processed in to a drug with a allegedly standardized dose. The drug is available for prescription in Tablets for oral administration contain 10, 20, 40, or 80 mg atorvastatin and the following inactive ingredients: calcium carbonate, USP; candelilla wax, FCC; croscarmellose sodium, NF; hydroxypropyl cellulose, NF; lactose monohydrate, NF; magnesium stearate, NF; microcrystalline cellulose, NF; Opadry White YS-1-7040 (hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, talc, titanium dioxide); polysorbate 80, NF; simethicone emulsion. Chemically, Liptor (Atorvastatin) calcium is [R-(R*, R*)]-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-β, δ-dihydroxy-5-(1-methylethyl)-3-phenyl-4-[(phenylamino)carbonyl]-1Hpyrrole- 1-heptanoic acid, calcium salt (2:1) trihydrate. A dozen or so years ago the profit margin for this drug was 4696% over cost for the 20 mg tablet. (Source).

Additionally, if you look at the chemical description of the drug you will see a fluoride ingredient (fluorophenyl), another risk to your good health.

Over the years many physicians and others have looked closely at this drug, especially since it was causing so many serious adverse effects. There was a concerted effort to cover up the adverse effects but in some cases they were so severe that drugs were removed from the market.

Back in 1998 there was an excellent clinical article proving that if you were taking a statin drug it would destroy the Coenzyme Q 10 manufactured in your liver. This enzyme is critical for heart health. At that time many more aligned with natural care were suggesting 300 mg a day of COQ10 to anyone using a statin drug. Then this dose of CoQ10 would cost at least $75 each month. Today I see this recommendation is still slow to take hold and the industry wants you to believe everyone needs a statin.

Another of the very risky side effects of statins is muscle pain. This is a symptom of what is known as rhabdomyolysis. This sesquipedalian work simply refers to the breaking down of muscle cells and the pigments lodge in your kidneys, leading to pain and kidney failure.

Other side effects that have been noted include sudden death, memory loss, increased risk of cancer, and many more. No wonder so many people stop taking the drug.

The other side of the picture seems to be endemic in mainstream medicine now. Doctors live and die by the term ‘evidence based’; in real life terms this is meaningless.

Most health care providers have been driven off the cliff to the point that they believe cholesterol lowering by any means is good for health. It’s so bad that some now think we just don’t need to prove the benefits of any treatment. Accept the brain washing and it all will work just the way we’ve told you. Not only is this not true but it may put your health at risk if you don’t question the fact that the cholesterol drugs and the cholesterol-lowering margarine have really never been proven to have any real benefit to your health.

In this same vein we have the effort to drive you from paying attention to what’s really good for your health.

If you’re faced with the cholesterol enigma my suggestion is first make sure your health provider thoroughly screens you for thyroid status. This is just more than a TSH test that will tell you nothing about what your thyroid is really doing. As your thyroid becomes ‘slow’ cholesterol levels usually go up.

Secondly, get nutrition! If you want to really get to the bottom line for health, eat good food.

And perhaps if you aren’t motivated, try a little coconut oil every day.
